Diane Jones Konihowski was Canada's greatest pentathlete in the late 1970s. She won Commonwealth Games gold in 1978 as well as Pan-American Games titles in 1975 and 1979.

Cuba's Alberto Juantorena - "El Caballo" - is the only man in Olympic history to win the 400m and 800m in the same Games. He achieved this remarkable double in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games.

He set the 800m world record of 1:43.50 while winning Olympic gold.

He broke that record the next year with his 1:43.44 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
