Waitz changed the concept of what women could achieve at the marathon distance.

I met her at Seattle's Super Jock 'n' Jill running store when she was on a publicity tour. Known for her prowess at the marathon distance, she was surprised and delighted when I asked her about her 1500m running at the 1976 Olympic Games, which I was privileged to see in person.
