Joan Benoit Samuelson
In one of the greatest, most iconic Olympic performances by a US athlete, Samuelson won the 1984 Olympic Games marathon - the very first time the event was held for women. After an epic win in the US Olympic Trials in Olympia, WA - 17 days after knee surgery - Samuelson had recovered fully in time for the Games.
She made a bold breakaway move early in the race and quite literally ran away from the field.
Both Grete Waitz and Ingrid Kristiansen came to rue the fact that Waitz let Samuelson go and Kristiansen based her race on Waitz's approach. Kristiansen later said it was the one race in her career that she'd like to do over. The Norwegians finished 2nd and 4th, respectively, while Portugal's Rosa Mota captured bronze.
