I met Coach Squires in 1976 at the US Olympic Marathon Trials in Eugene, Oregon.
Squires coached me by mail for several years.
His memorable advice - especially as he knew I had been coached by Bowerman and Dellinger - was for me to try out from his program what seemed appropriate for me, and rather than make colossal changes in my training program all at once, to incorporate changes gradually over time.
In a very profound way, he taught me to be my own coach.
