I took this photograph at approximately 8:30 pm after the conclusion of the 5,000m race, which was won by Prefontaine.

Four hours later Prefontaine died in a car accident. While photographs were likely taken of him at a post-meet gathering later that evening, this may well be the last photo taken of Prefontaine in a competitive setting.
