Day 1 Highlights

Washington State swept the six-mile with John Ngeno leading the way in 28:23.6, Dan Murphy 2nd in 28:33.2, and Phil Burkwist 3rd in 29:03.8. In 6th place was Stanford's Tony Sandoval in 29:28.4. 

Sandoval would circle this track again three years later while finishing a heartbreaking 4th in the 1976 Olympic Trials marathon.

Mac Wilkins broke 60' in the shot put for the first time and finished the day with the title and a huge new PB of 63-7.
