Frank Shorter won what the Eugene Register-Guard called "A nice run in the park for Shorter."
If anyone could ever have been called 'heavily favored for 2nd', it was Billy Rodgers, who did just that - made the Olympic team with his 2nd place finish.
3rd was Don Kardong, picked by almost no one.
Almost! See: A Ride for Robert.
Shorter won in 2:11:51, Rodgers clocked 2:11:58, while Kardong ran 2:13.54.
Also of note was that an American Record was set in the 10,000m that day.
