This was an era of intense rivalry between East Germany and the United States, especially in women's events, where there were open accusations of drug use by US swimmers against East Germany.
The swimming highlight for me was the privilege of being in the Natatorium for Brian Goodell's historic 1500m win in world record time.
In diving, a 16-year-old Greg Louganis (US) won silver behind veteran Klaus Dibiasi of Italy.
