High school senior Craig Brigham broke the national high school record in the decathlon. The Eugene Register-Guard notes that this was the oldest national high school record on the books. Milt Campbell's 7253 had stood since 1953; Brigham set the new standard at 7373. This was a remarkable performance, especially in light of what the Register-Guard described as a "steady downpour" throughout the Invitational, which doubled as day 2 of the decathlon.
Al Hearvey won both sprints; 10.8 for the 100m and 21.4w for the 200m. He anchored the sprint relay team to an astonishing time of 40.2, remarkable under the challenging weather conditions - and the #2 time in Oregon history (ER-G).
Freshman Steve Bence ran an auspicious 1:49.2 800m for the win.
Mac Wilkins set the school record in the discus for the first time of many, breaking Neil Steinhauer's 187-3 by half an inch (ER-G). Mike Bolliger improved his school record in the hammer with his 175-1, an improvement by 5'5".
The rain showed in the vertical jump results as 17-4 vaulter Kirk Bryde of Washington won with 15-0, and Oregon's Marty Hill won the high jump with a leap of 6-6.
Ivory Harris mastered the conditions to win the high hurdles in 14.0; Bouncy Moore won the the long jump with his leap of 25-1.
For a regional April 1st invitational, the performances in the distances were remarkable. Steepler Todd Lathers won the 1500 in 3:45.6 and a total of seven finished at 3:48.9 or faster.
In the steeplechase, Jim Gorman (OTC) won in 8:48.0 and was joined by Oregon's Mike Long (8:52.0) and Gary Williams (8:57.0) under 9:00.
And in the two-mile run, Steve Prefontaine won in 8:35.2 as all seven finishers ran 8:53 or faster.
