As a freshman, Oregon State's Tom Woods won the high jump in a meet record 7-3.25. Notable in 3rd was future world record holder and two-time Olympic bronze medalist, Dwight Stones (UCLA), also a freshman.
USC's freshman Randy Williams - soon to be Olympic Champion - won the long jump in a windy 26-8.25.
Oregon's Pete Shmock was 2nd in the shot put at 64-10.25, with UTEP's Fred DiBernardi the winner in 66-6.5. DiBernardi also won the discus, in 196-5. The hammer was won by Al Schoterman in 231-1, in both Championship and Meet records.
Oregon's Mac Wilkins was 4th in the discus at 183-7, while Steve Bence was 6th in the 800 as a freshman in 1:47.7.
Steve Prefontaine won the 5,000 in 13:31.4, with Penn State's Greg Fredericks 2nd in 13:34.0. Pre set a meet record in a race in which the top 6 broke the meet record! (T+FNews) This was the race in which Pre famously waved Fredericks forward in an effort to get him to share the pace.
John Halberstadt (Oklahoma State) set the 10,000m meet record of 28:50.
The Oregon men's relay teams acquitted themselves well with a runnerup finish in the 4x400m in 3:05.5 and 6th in the 4x100m in 40.4.
Ross Blackman, Vince Buford, John Mays, and Al Hearvey made up the sprint relay, while Vince Buford (47.0), Craig Blackmon (45.4), Doug Chapman (47.1), and Weldon Vance (45.7) were the 4x400m squad (splits from T+F News).
