Jim Bailey and Bill Dellinger are two of the most significant runners in University of Oregon history.
They are both honored with side-by-side placement on the outside wall of Hayward Hall in Eugene.
Jim Bailey was from Australia and he came to Oregon where he became the first athlete coached by Bill Bowerman to break the four-minute mile barrier with his 3:58.6 in 1956, the first sub-4:00 minute mile in the United States.
Bill Dellinger was a compatriot of Bailey's, and Dellinger won the bronze medal in the 5,000m in the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. He also was a member of the 1956 and 1960 US Olympic teams.
Dellinger went on to be head coach of the University of Oregon Track and Field and Cross Country program. He excelled at coaching both sports, but is noted especially for his 4 NCAA men's cross country championships. He is noted, too, for having been Steve Prefontaine's primary coach.
On a personal note, when Bill Bowerman retired as Head Coach, he also retired from teaching, and Bill Dellinger took over the running class that Bowerman was so famour for. I continued to run under Dellinger's tutelage until I graduated in 1975.
