Iowa State's Peg Neppel broke teammate Carol Cook's 34:49.0 by 30 seconds, while Cook broke her previous American Record while finishing second to Neppel in 34:42.2.
3rd was Cheryl Bridges and 5th was Jacqueline Hansen, both marathon world record setters.
Bridges was a past and Hansen was the then-current world record holder in the marathon
4th was Nadia Garcia of the San Diego Track Club.
Additional performances of note:
Oregon's Karen Marshall set the school shot put record with her 47' 1 3/4" throw.
Tinker Hatfield won the pole vault, breaking his own University of Oregon school record by an inch, in 16-9.
Hailu Ebba won the 1500 in 3:39.21.
This was the first race I covered as a journalist.
I wrote the story for the US Olympic Trials program.
I also had an article printed in the 1976 July edition of Runner’s World magazine - a group interview conducted with Trials qualifiers the night before the Trials Marathon.
