Canada's Michel Vaillancourt took silver and Belgium's Francois Mathy, bronze.
Heartbreakingly, Great Britain's Debbie Johnsey finished last in the jump off and 4th overall. Had she won a medal, she would have been the first woman in Olympic history to have done so.
Similarly, in Rio, Great Britain's Nick Shelton won a dramatic jumpoff to score by far the most important win of his lengthy career. He won a 6-rider jumpoff!
Shelton also won team gold in 2012.
Sweden's Peder Fredricsson and Canada's Eric Lamaze took silver and bronze, respectively.
At the classy medal ceremony, Shelton's stiff upper lip was not quite so stiff! It quivered as he fought back tears as the enormity of his accomplishment overwhelmed him.
When it came to maintaining composure during the medal ceremony, he did far better than I.
