As a dyed in the wool distance person who graduated from the University of Oregon in 1975, many might have expected me to gravitate towards covering middle distance and distance events.

Instead, I found not only an interest in the throws, but an opening in covering them. Few reporters showed up to interview throwers other than shot putters, and I carved out a niche in covering throws.
