Since 2014, I have covered 2-6 throwing events at US National, World, and Olympic Championships for Track and Field News.
Thank you, Sieg Lindstrom, Editor of Track and Field News.
Tsepang Makethe is a South African hammer thrower, and he was the subject of my first discursive piece about a thrower: As Good As Gold.
Four years later I covered the Continental Cup in Ostrava, Czech Republic. Makethe didn't know I was there - we hadn't seen each other since - and as he exited the competition area to the mixed zone (the interview area where athletes and journalists mix), he spied me and took off like a rocket, sprinted towards me, and nearly knocked over the barrier separating journalists from athletes!
US hammer thrower Sean Donnelly stood next to us, mouth agape, wondering what on earth was going on.
"My first hammer interview," I said. "2014. World Juniors."
"Ahhhh," said Donnelly, knowingly.
He understood.
Hammer throwers stick together.
