This is the original photograph (cropped), taken with what I believe was a Kodak Instamatic camera.

Only a handful of people have seen this photo in the 48 years since I took it. I have a deep sense of responsibility in curating this record of what is a deeply and enduringly sad event.

I am releasing it now and trust the public will treat it with the dignity and respect his memory, his family, his friends, and his fans deserve.

In the four track seasons from 1972-75, I brought my camera to a University of Oregon track meet twice.

The first time was in my first spring in Oregon - 1972.

The second time I brought my camera to Hayward Field was May 29, 1975.

I have no idea why.
