Five records were set at these championships as athletes rounded into form for the Olympic Trials.
Greg Fredericks set the American record of 28:08.0 in the 10,000m, with Frank Shorter second in 28:12.0 and Tom Laris third in 28:12.6.
Rod Milburn equaled the championship record of 13.4 in the 110m hurdles. Willie Davenport was second in 13.6, with Thomas Hill third in 13.6.
Dave Roberts became the 3rd man in history to clear 18' in the pole vault when he soared over 5.49m.
Randy Matson set the championship record in the shot put with his 69-6.25/21.19. Second was Doug Lane's 66.75/20.14 with Brian Oldfield 3rd at 66-.5.
Jay Silvester set a championship record in the discus at 212-11/64.92, second was Tim Vollmer in 212-0/64.64, with Rickard Drescher 3rd at 201-10.
Other notable performances: Steve Savage was 2nd in the steeplechase in 8:34.7 behind James Dare's winning 8:33.7. Fred Luke won the javelin in 277-5, and Larry Young ran away with the 5,000m walk title by 48 seconds in 21:39.8.
Lee Evans won a tightly contested 400m in 45.0, with Vince Matthews 2nd in 45.1, and Fred Newhouse 3rd in 45.3.
Soon-to-be-famous Dave Wottle won the 800m in 1:47.3, this title a harbinger of things to come.
Sadly, the track that hosted this meet as well as the 1990 Goodwill Games no longer exists; it was removed to expand Washington's football facilities.
